A TikTok user, Nassif Jingo, has been arrested by Kampala Metropolitan Police for allegedly spreading false information about the death of Hon. Yusuf Nsibambi, Member of Parliament for Mawokota South.
Police say Jingo was allegedly paid Shs 100,000 by Nsibambi’s political rivals to post the fake news on his social media platform in an attempt to discredit the legislator.
The MP reported the incident, leading to Jingo’s arrest. He is currently detained at CPS Kampala.
“Nassif confessed to the crime and revealed that he was paid by Nsibambi’s political opponents in the country to damage his image,” said SSP Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson.
Onyango described the case as a serious abuse of online platforms and urged the public to be vigilant against misinformation.
“We urge the public to use social media responsibly and avoid spreading misinformation, especially during this political period where such tactics can be used to discredit opponents. We also warn against accepting payments to damage someone’s reputation online,” SSP Onyango added.
Police confirmed that Jingo will face charges under the Computer Misuse Act.
