At least 63 people have died and several others injured in a road traffic accident that occurred early today, 22nd October 2025, at 12:15 a.m. in Kitaleba Village, near Asili Farm, along the Kampala–Gulu Highway.
The crash involved four vehicles: an Isuzu bus (UBF 614X, Nile Star Coaches), a Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB 07), a Tata Lorry (UBK 647C), and another Isuzu bus (UAM 045V, Planet Company).
Preliminary investigations indicate that the UBF 614X Isuzu bus, travelling from Kampala to Gulu, attempted to overtake the Tata Lorry. At the same time, the UAM 045V Isuzu bus, coming from the opposite direction, was trying to overtake the Toyota Surf. Both buses collided head-on during the manoeuvres. One driver attempted to swerve to avoid the collision, triggering a chain reaction that caused the vehicles to overturn several times, leading to multiple fatalities and injuries.
SP Michael Kananura, the CLO/PRO at the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, confirmed the figures and urged motorists to exercise caution.
“This is a tragic accident that has claimed 63 lives and left several others injured. We strongly urge all motorists to avoid reckless overtaking, which remains one of the leading causes of road crashes in Uganda,” SP Kananura said.
The injured were rushed to Kiryandongo Hospital and other nearby health facilities, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem and identification.
Police investigations into the crash are ongoing, as authorities continue to urge road users to adhere to traffic rules and drive safely to prevent such disasters.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a quick recovery to those injured,” SP Kananura added.
