The long-awaited Hoima City Stadium, one of Uganda’s flagship projects for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has been completed and is ready for commissioning, Minister of State for Education and Sports, Peter Ogwang, has announced.
“Hoima City Stadium has been completed. We now await its commissioning by the President,” Ogwang confirmed, hailing the development as a major step forward in Uganda’s AFCON readiness.
Constructed by Turkish firm SUMMA at a cost of $129 million (about UGX 480 billion), the 20,000-seater facility will officially be opened by President Yoweri Museveni in December, coinciding with his campaign tour of the Bunyoro sub-region.
The stadium stands as a key part of Uganda’s sports infrastructure expansion ahead of co-hosting AFCON 2027 with Kenya and Tanzania. It is expected to boost sports development, tourism, and local investment in western Uganda.
The state-of-the-art complex includes a semi-Olympic swimming pool, indoor arena, training grounds, and outdoor sports courts, making it one of the most modern sports facilities in the country.
Officials say the completion of Hoima Stadium underscores the government’s commitment to meeting CAF standards and delivering the necessary infrastructure in time for the continental tournament.
Once commissioned, the stadium will not only host football and rugby matches but also serve as a multi-sport and community development hub for youth in the Bunyoro region.
