President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has opened his 2026 re-election campaign in Luwero District where he addressed residents and outlined the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) achievements since coming to power.
The President told supporters that while Uganda has seen a dramatic transformation since the liberation struggle, the next phase of his leadership will focus squarely on tackling poverty at the household level.
“From the time we stood with your parents in Luwero to today, I can proudly say that Uganda has transformed. The only thing left for us to do is to loosen the grip of poverty by utilizing government programs,” Museveni said.
He highlighted progress in key sectors:
Education: UPE schools in Luwero have grown from 30 in 1986 to 488 today.
Health: Health centres have expanded from 5 in 1986 to 88 currently.
Water: Clean water points increased from 27 in 1986 to more than 2,000 today, with 1,371 in Luwero alone.
Wealth Creation: Government has allocated UGX 72 billion to the Parish Development Model (PDM).
The NRM leader added that his government has not only been a force for security but also for reconciliation and peace.
“As I’ve always said, the NRM is not just about fighters; we are also peacemakers. We’ve tackled significant issues, including the challenges of fees in UPE and USE schools, the misuse and theft of drugs in government health centres, and land problems,” he said.
Museveni called on the people of Luwero to remain steadfast in their support for the ruling party.
“I urge everyone to continue supporting the NRM so that together we can build a modern Uganda.”
The President announced that his next campaign stop will be in the Lango sub-region as he continues to seek a fresh mandate in the 2026 general elections.
