P.5 Pupil Dies After Fight with Classmate at Jinja School

A 15-year-old pupil of Wansimba Primary School in Butagaya Sub-county, Jinja District, lost his life after a fight with a fellow classmate, sending shockwaves through the school community

The deceased, Collin Byaguba, a Primary Five pupil and son of Mr. Waiswa Mutagaya of Namavundu Village, reportedly got into a physical altercation on Wednesday evening over an unresolved misunderstanding, the cause of which remains unclear.

SP James Mubi, the Kiira Region Police spokesperson, revealed that the tragic incident unfolded in full view of other pupils, who reportedly neither intervened nor alerted school authorities.

“Teachers must not leave pupils especially in primary schools unsupervised. Class teachers should appoint a responsible pupil to monitor their peers or leave clear instructions with class representatives to ensure the safety and security of all learners,” Mubi emphasized.

He also urged schools to strengthen counseling programs and establish safe, confidential channels for students to report disputes.

George Waibi, tje school’s headteacher promptly reported the incident to police.

Officers responded quickly, taking statements from witnesses and arresting the alleged offender, a 14-year-old pupil, who is now in custody as investigations continue under the guidance of the prosecution.

The body of Collin Byaguba was transported to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Authorities are continuing inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fatal altercation.
