Police have detained 29 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) following a disturbance along the Mityana highway at Bujjuko Trading Centre on Monday afternoon.
The group is accused of blocking the road and disrupting traffic as presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert, also known as Bobi Wine, prepared to hold a campaign rally in Mityana District.
According to a statement issued by the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), Kyagulanyi was scheduled to travel to Mityana on October 6, 2025, for his presidential rally.
Although he was initially expected to use the Mityana highway, the opposition leader instead opted for the Hoima Road route.
Police said a joint security deployment had been arranged to facilitate Kyagulanyi’s movement and maintain peace along both routes. However, despite this preparation, a group of his supporters allegedly gathered at Bujjuko Trading Centre, where they began drumming, whistling, and blocking sections of the highway — actions that brought traffic to a standstill.
In response, security personnel reportedly issued several warnings to the group before intervening.
SSP Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrests and said the suspects are currently detained at Wakiso Police Division.
“At Bujjuko trading centre along the Mityana highway, a group of NUP supporters gathered, drumming, whistling, and blocking the road, disrupting traffic flow and inciting unrest. Security personnel issued warnings, but the group persisted, leading to the arrest of about 29 suspects who are currently held at Wakiso Police Division,” Onyango said.
He noted that police are investigating the matter and that the suspects will face charges of unlawful assembly, obstruction of traffic, and incitement to violence once inquiries are concluded.
SSP Onyango also urged political candidates to cooperate with law enforcement during campaign activities and to adhere to agreed route plans to ensure public safety.
“We urge all presidential candidates to comply with traffic regulations, follow approved route plans, and respect the rights of other road users,” he added.
Kyagulanyi’s campaign events in Mityana have continued to attract large crowds, highlighting his strong urban support base. However, police warned that any acts that threaten public order or inconvenience other road users will be met with firm action.
The incident in Bujjuko underscores ongoing tensions between security forces and opposition supporters as the 2026 presidential campaigns gather momentum across the country.
