Police in Rwenzori West Region have arrested a man suspected of stealing fresh coffee after a police sniffer dog tracked him to his home in Kisomoro Sub-county, Bunyangabu District.

The case began when farmer Fred Rugumayo noticed a hole behind his coffee store and suspected his produce had been stolen. He quickly informed officers at Nyakigumba Police Station, who responded with the K9 Unit, Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), and CID personnel

A police statement confirmed that the sniffer dog, named Darkis, was deployed to follow the scent trail.

“The police sniffer dog led officers for about 600 meters to the home of a suspect identified as Lasson Bwambale, where the stolen coffee and a tapline were recovered,” the statement reads.

Police added that the recovered items were verified by Rugumayo as his property.

“The suspect was immediately arrested, and the exhibits were secured as part of ongoing investigations,” police said.

The suspect remains in custody at Nyakigumba Police Station as inquiries continue.
