The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that Ugandans will go to the polls on January 15, 2026, to elect the country’s next President and Members of Parliament.

Making the announcement in Kampala on Tuesday, Justice Simon Byabakama, the EC Chairperson, said campaigns will officially close two days before voting.

“The Presidential polling date shall be 15th January 2026, and all campaigns will stop 48 hours prior to polling day,” Justice Byabakama stated.

The declaration officially kicks off the race toward the 2026 General Elections, setting the stage for what is anticipated to be a highly competitive contest.

Among the notable presidential contenders are incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of the NRM, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) of the NUP, Maj Gen (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu of the ANT, and Nathan Nandala Mafabi of the FDC.

Other candidates who have declared interest include Mubarak Munyagwa of the Common Man’s Party, Robert Kasibante of the Peasants Party, and Elton John Mabirizi, an independent aspirant.

The Electoral Commission is expected to issue a detailed election roadmap outlining nomination schedules, campaign guidelines, and procedures to ensure a credible and peaceful election.
