After a legal battle that captured national and international attention, State Minister for Finance and Planning, Amos Lugoloobi, has been cleared of all charges related to the diversion of aid meant for underprivileged communities in Karamoja.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) formally discontinued the case.
The controversy dates back to 2023, when investigations revealed that iron sheets intended for vulnerable households under the Karamoja Community Empowerment Programme were being misappropriated by high-ranking officials.
Lugoloobi admitted to having received over 700 pre-painted iron sheets and using them to roof a goat shed on his farm in Kayunga District. Following public outcry, he apologized, dismantled the shed, and returned the materials.
The case, which lasted two years, reportedly took a heavy emotional and mental toll on the minister.
Alongside Lugoloobi, two other cabinet ministers—Mary Goretti Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu—were also implicated in the scandal.
The saga drew significant public scrutiny, with pressure from the police, the President, and international observers, including the UK government.
With the DPP’s decision to drop charges, Lugoloobi can now move forward and put behind him a controversy that has loomed over his career for the past two years.
