A top health official in Lugazi Municipality has been dragged to court over allegations of fraudulently obtaining money from a job seeker by promising him a government appointment.
Dr. Saadi Wataba, who serves as the Municipal Medical Officer, was produced before the Mukono Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. His appearance followed an operation by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit working jointly with the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Prosecutors accuse Dr. Wataba of colluding with two other officials — Nakisunga Sub-County LC III Chairperson Mubarak Sekikubo and Ronald Mugerwa Saaku, the Probation and Welfare Officer for Lugazi Municipality — to fraudulently obtain Shs 38 million from Dr. Mukisa George William between January and June 2025.
The trio allegedly convinced the victim that the money would be used to “facilitate” members of the Mukono District Service Commission to guarantee him a medical officer job in the district. Investigators say the claims were fraudulent and part of a scheme to exploit job seekers desperate for public employment.
The three officials have been charged with obtaining money by false pretence and conspiracy to defraud.
Authorities say the case forms part of an intensified crackdown on corruption and influence-peddling in public service recruitment, especially at district level.
