Today, Monday, November 10, 2025, marks the official start of campaign meetings for the 2026 Parliamentary and Local Government Council elections across the country.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has urged all political parties, candidates including independents their agents, supporters, and the general public to strictly adhere to the campaign guidelines to ensure peaceful and orderly campaigns.
According to Paul Bukenya, the Deputy Spokesperson of the Electoral Commission, campaign meetings shall be conducted strictly in line with the harmonized campaign program agreed upon by all candidates within each constituency or electoral area.
“Campaign meetings shall be held only in accordance with the harmonized campaign program, which is agreed upon by all candidates in each respective constituency or electoral area, and as approved by the respective returning officer and shared with security for purposes of ensuring a secure environment and a peaceful and orderly campaign exercise,” Bukenya said.
He emphasized that campaigns will only be conducted between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on each campaign day, warning candidates and their supporters not to exceed the stipulated time..
“We are calling on candidates, their agents, and supporters to ensure that campaign meetings do not go beyond 6:00 p.m. Equally important, we are calling on candidates and their agents not to use or publish any language or defamatory words that incite public disorder, hatred, or violence, or that threaten war,” Bukenya cautioned.
He further appealed to all stakeholders to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the campaign period so as to achieve a peaceful and credible electoral process.
A total of 2,025 candidates were nominated to contest for the 353 constituencies for directly elected Members of Parliament, while 640 candidates are vying for the 146 District/City Woman Representative positions in Parliament.
In addition, 521 candidates were nominated to contest for the 146 District and City Chairperson seats.
Overall, 83,597 candidates are taking part in campaigns for the 45,505 elective positions in the 2026 General Election — ranging from President to Sub-County Councillor.
The campaign period is expected to run until two weeks before the general elections, which are scheduled for January 15, 2026.
