Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, speaking to journalists on Monday at the police headquarters in Naguru, said the officers had responded to information about a robbery.

“In the night, we registered an incident of a murder of a police officer, ASP Emmanuel Bagenda, the officer in charge of Ntaawo Police Post that is in Mukono Municipality. ASP Emmanuel Bagenda and another police constable received information that there was a robbery that had been registered in Kiwala village, so they responded.”

Describing the confrontation, Kituuma added, “A number of area OCs tried to put up snaps and also to lay well these criminals who were said to be on motorcycles. It was alleged that motorcycles could have been around two. So when ASP Bagenda and his colleague saw a suspicious motorcycle speeding, they tried to intercept it, and in the process, they were shot at.”

He confirmed the outcome of the attack, saying, “The police constable got injured, but Bagenda was fatally shot, sustaining injuries that led to his demise. In that process, they also took his firearm. The officer, police constable, was taken to hospital by the response force; the remains of ASP Emmanuel Bagenda were conveyed to the mortuary, but we are pursuing the assailants and we hope to get them and bring them to justice once apprehended.”

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, who are believed to have fled the scene on motorcycles. The injured constable is receiving treatment at a local hospital.
