Police in Kampala have arrested two men in connection with a major break-in and theft at JBK Plaza, where 16 shops dealing in mobile money, forex, and general merchandise were broken into, with thieves escaping with UGX 33 million and USD 26,600.
According to SSP Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson, the incident occurred on October 20, 2025, at around 7:30 a.m., when officers received information about the suspected burglary.
“Police received information about a suspected break-in and theft at JBK Plaza, where 16 shops were broken into. The stolen amount was approximately UGX 33,240,000 and 26,600 USD,” said SSP Onyango.
He explained that detectives from the Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala immediately launched investigations and recovered CCTV footage from one of the affected shops, G-12, where the owner identified one of the culprits as Gahungu Bosco, a security guard (askari) at the building.
“Upon reviewing CCTV footage from shop G-12, the owner identified one of the suspects as Gahungu Bosco, an askari of the building, along with other unknown male persons,” Onyango noted.
Police later tracked and arrested two suspects, identified as Bani Joseph alias Young and Bhosa Samuel alias Sam, who both confessed to participating in the robbery.
“The suspects were arrested and detained at CPS Kampala on charges of shop breaking and theft. They confessed to the crime and admitted to participating in the robbery,” he said.
On November 3, 2025, the duo was taken back to the scene for reconstruction, where they demonstrated how they planned and executed the crime.
“Police took the suspects for scene reconstruction where they demonstrated how they carried out the robbery,” Onyango confirmed.
Meanwhile, police are still pursuing Gahungu Bosco and five other suspects believed to have been involved in the break-in. Onyango appealed to members of the public to share any information that could assist in their arrest.
“We appeal to the public for any information that may lead to the arrest of Bosco and the other suspects still on the run,” he said.
