Uganda Boosts Heart Care as Mulago Introduces Life-Saving Cardiac MRI Technology

Mulago National Referral Hospital has begun offering Uganda’s first Cardiac MRI services, marking a new era in specialized heart imaging and care.

The cutting-edge technology, introduced in collaboration with the Uganda Heart Institute, strengthens the country’s capacity to diagnose and manage complex heart conditions locally.

It also promises to ease the financial burden on patients who have long been forced to seek advanced cardiac tests in foreign hospitals.

The Cardiac MRI provides an advanced, non-invasive way to examine the heart using powerful magnetic fields and radio waves.

Its detailed imaging capabilities allow specialists to identify a wide range of conditions, including congenital defects, valve disorders, heart muscle diseases, and unusual growths within or around the heart.

The scan plays a critical role in evaluating damage after heart attacks and in determining the underlying causes of heart failure.

Through precise measurements, it assesses how effectively the heart pumps blood and examines the size and thickness of the heart walls.

Its 3D visualisation of the heart’s anatomy gives doctors a clearer understanding of blood flow, structural abnormalities, and tissue characteristics, including scarring caused by previous cardiac events.

By introducing this advanced diagnostic tool, Mulago positions itself as a leader in modern heart care and brings world-class cardiac imaging closer to Ugandan patients who need it most.
