The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has called on all importers and clearing agents with long-stay containers at the Port of Mombasa to take advantage of a 100% waiver on port-related charges recently announced by Kenyan authorities.
According to URA, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) issued a joint notice on November 6, 2025, introducing measures aimed at enhancing efficiency at the port. Among these measures is a 100% waiver on accrued port storage charges and customs warehouse rent for containerized cargo that has stayed long at the port.
“This waiver will apply upon lodgment of a waiver application by the affected customers,” URA said in a public notice issued on Tuesday.
In addition, shipping lines have been directed to extend a 100% waiver on accrued container demurrage charges, further easing the financial burden on importers.
However, URA clarified that primary port charges, rail freight fees, shipping line costs such as Delivery Order and Terminal Handling Charges, and statutory taxes remain payable.
“URA therefore encourages all Ugandan importers and clearing agents with long-stay containers at the Port of Mombasa to take advantage of the window by liaising promptly with their shipping lines and port agents to process the necessary applications,” the notice reads in part.
The waiver will remain effective for 30 days—from November 6 to December 6, 2025.
