A group of 124 officers from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces Engineers Brigade has completed an intensive course in land law and estate management, marking another step in the army’s push to professionalise the handling of public land under its care.

The training, conducted at the Uganda Military Engineers College in Lugazi, was designed to equip engineers with the skills needed to manage land more effectively and to minimise disputes that often arise from unclear ownership, poor planning or procedural gaps.

Officers underwent practical sessions on land acquisition, utilisation, documentation and the legal responsibilities that come with managing government property. The course also introduced them to common causes of land conflicts within military zones and how to prevent them through proper planning and adherence to established policies.

The Engineers Brigade plays a critical role in developing and safeguarding UPDF infrastructure across the country, making land-related knowledge essential for officers who frequently supervise construction works, oversee project sites and interact with surrounding communities.

By the end of the programme, the trainees had gained a stronger understanding of how informed land management contributes to smoother project implementation, community protection and better use of public resources.

The pass-out ceremony, held at the Lugazi Cantonment, brought together senior officers and instructors who acknowledged the growing need for specialised skills in the force as the UPDF expands its development projects nationwide.
