An American national confirmed dead while other members of her family were injured after a passenger train collided with their vehicle at a railway crossing in Kampala.

Police say the accident occurred on Friday evening, December 19, 2025, at around 5:25pm at Wankoko Railway Crossing along Spring Road, within the jurisdiction of Jinja Road Police.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire, a passenger train travelling from Kampala to Mukono struck a Mitsubishi Pajero, registration number UBF 582X, which was heading from Luzira towards the city centre.

The impact was severe, with the train dragging the vehicle nearly 200 metres from the crossing, leaving it extensively damaged.

The vehicle was carrying four occupants, all United States citizens attached to a non-governmental organisation known as Baptism Mission in Uganda. They were identified as Gardener Mathew, his wife Savana Gardener, and their two children.

All the victims were rushed to Rubis Hospital along the Lugogo Bypass for emergency treatment. However, Savana Gardener, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said the surviving occupants sustained injuries, though their condition had not yet been disclosed by press time.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the crash may have resulted from failure to observe safety instructions at the railway crossing, including hand signals from a Railway Police officer who was on duty at the time. Police cautioned that these findings are not final and remain subject to further investigations.

Railway Police officers have since documented the scene, and statements from witnesses are being recorded. Police has expressed condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured a quick recovery as investigations continue.
