Police have arrested Ziringura Ronard, a driver attached to Gateway Bus Company, after he was found operating a passenger bus while intoxicated.
The incident occurred at 1:56 am on November 30, 2025, during a routine traffic checkpoint operation.
Ziringura, who was behind the wheel of bus UBM 706X, was subjected to an alcohol test that confirmed he was driving under the influence.
He was immediately detained at Mpigi Police Station, and authorities say he will be produced in court tomorrow to face charges related to drunk driving.
Confirming the incident, SP Michael Kananura, the Public Relations Officer of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, condemned the behavior and emphasized the police’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding road users.
“We confirm the detention of Ziringura Ronard. The driver was tested and found to be under the influence of alcohol while operating the bus. He will appear in court tomorrow to answer charges of driving under the influence of alcohol,” SP Kananura said.
He explained that the arrest was part of strengthened enforcement under the ongoing “Arrive Alive” operations, which have been intensified due to increased traffic on major routes across the country.
“The testing of bus drivers at our checkpoints is part of our ongoing ‘Arrive Alive’ operations as we are in a period of increased traffic on the roads. We strongly warn and caution all motorists against drinking and driving,” he added.
Kananura further noted that police checkpoints nationwide remain active and continue to screen drivers to prevent avoidable road crashes.
“Our checkpoints across the country are fully active and continuously testing drivers,” he said.
Police have urged motorists to act responsibly, reminding them that reckless behaviour puts countless lives at risk.
“Say NO to drink and driving. Your safety and that of other road users matters,” SP Kananura stressed.
Ziringura’s arrest adds to a growing number of cases police say are linked to negligence and disregard for road safety guidelines.
