The government has committed to supporting the transformation of the historic Muchwa Building in Fort Portal City into a cultural legacy centre aimed at preserving Tooro Kingdom’s heritage and promoting socio-economic development.

The commitment was made by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni after a meeting at Rwakitura with Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Omuhikirwa Calvin Armstrong Rwomire, his Deputy, and the Kingdom’s Ministers responsible for Youth and Tourism.

President Museveni said the discussions focused on how the landmark structure can be redeveloped into a multi-purpose facility that safeguards cultural history while creating opportunities for young people and boosting tourism in the region.

“Today, at Rwakitura, I met with the Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Omuhikirwa Calvin Armstrong Rwomire, his Deputy, and the ministers of youth and tourism of the kingdom. We discussed and agreed that the government will support the redevelopment of the historic Muchwa Building in Fort Portal into a multi-purpose legacy centre to preserve Tooro’s cultural heritage, support youth engagement, promote tourism, and ensure economic sustainability,” Museveni said.

Once redeveloped, the centre is expected to host cultural exhibitions, community activities, and youth programs, while also serving as a tourism attraction for Fort Portal City and the greater Rwenzori region.

The President noted that investing in cultural heritage is key to strengthening national identity and unlocking economic potential through tourism and creative industries.

Government technical teams are expected to work closely with Tooro Kingdom authorities to guide the redevelopment process and ensure the project delivers lasting benefits to the local community.
