Police in Kampala have confirmed that Christmas and Boxing Day passed largely without incident, with security operations successfully managing large crowds across the city and surrounding areas.
According to KMP, festive activities—including concerts, beach outings, and church services—were conducted safely at venues such as Imperial Resort Beach Hotel, Aero Beach, Lido and White Sand beaches, Kitubulu Public Beach, Nkumba and Manyago beaches, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC), and Victoria Mall. Police officers maintained a visible presence throughout, ensuring events ran smoothly.
Despite the generally calm celebrations, authorities responded to a fire outbreak in Kajjansi Town Council, Wakiso District, in the early hours of December 26.
A six-roomed house in Kitende was completely destroyed, though all nine occupants escaped unharmed. Preliminary investigations suggest an electrical fault may have caused the blaze.
Detectives, Scenes of Crime Officers, and the Fire Brigade were deployed to secure the scene and begin inquiries.
Other minor incidents reported included one injury at Aero Beach, a fatal road accident, a serious road accident, and four minor traffic accidents. Several suspected phone snatchers were also arrested, including a known criminal from the Kisenyi area nicknamed “Makona.”
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, praised the public for their cooperation and responsible behavior during the festive period.
He noted that crime and accident levels were lower than in previous years, attributing the improvement to increased police visibility and joint operations with other security agencies, including the UPDF and Aviation Police.
With New Year celebrations approaching, KMP reassured residents that security measures would remain in place to ensure public safety across the metropolitan area.
