Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has announced significant progress in its emergency drainage works aimed at ending the persistent flooding problem in downtown Kampala, particularly along Ssebana Kizito Road and Allen Road, two of the city’s most flood-prone corridors.
KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki said the Authority has so far completed 7 out of 18 new drainage crossings, with the remaining works expected to be finalized within the next 30 days.
“We have constructed 7 of the 18 new drainage crossings along Ssebana Kizito and Allen roads to prevent the risk of similar disasters,” Buzeki said.
“We are completing the remaining 11 over the next 30 days, and this issue will be resolved once and for all.”
The emergency interventions follow the recent flash floods that disrupted business, destroyed merchandise, and left traders counting losses.
Buzeki also provided an update on the compensation process for affected traders. A total of 451 traders were profiled and their losses assessed.
“Four hundred fifty-one traders were identified and their losses documented,” she said.
“The list was submitted to the Office of the Prime Minister, which will determine the final support package, and we shall keep them posted on the process.”
She noted that KCCA is committed to ensuring long-term, sustainable solutions to Kampala’s drainage challenges, while also working with central government to support affected business communities.
