The Kitagwenda District LC5 Chairperson, Ismail Mushemeza Kambanda, has been charged and remanded over allegations of selling public service jobs.
Kambanda was arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, working jointly with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
He was on Tuesday arraigned before the Kamwenge Magistrates Court, where he faced multiple charges of obtaining money by false pretences.
Prosecution alleges that the district chairperson solicited and received money from several job seekers, falsely claiming he had the authority to secure them employment in Kitagwenda District local government.
Court heard that the accused allegedly demanded varying sums of money from the victims in exchange for promised appointments, which never materialised.
The magistrate remanded Kambanda to prison until a later date when he will return to court for mention as investigations continue.
The arrest is part of ongoing government efforts to crack down on corruption and abuse of office, particularly in recruitment processes within local governments.
