NEMA enforcement officers have arrested Mr. Magan Patel, the founder of the MMP Group, for allegedly dumping soil into the Bugembe wetland in Jinja City.
Patel leads the MMP Group, a major Ugandan conglomerate with operations in agriculture, edible oils, soap manufacturing, and household goods, including Nile Agro Industries.
The arrest, carried out on Sunday, comes as wetlands across the country continue to be destroyed by construction and industrial activity.
Environmentalists say enforcement has been weak and accuse the government of allowing powerful individuals and companies to degrade protected ecosystems with little consequence.⊆
