Fireworks displays during the New Year celebrations will only be conducted by licensed blasters and must not exceed five minutes, Police have said, as authorities tighten safety measures ahead of the New Year.
Addressing journalists, Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke said the directive applies to all approved applicants, including hotels, entertainment centres and places of worship, warning that any display conducted outside the guidelines will be stopped.
“Fireworks shall only be discharged by licensed blasters representing approved applicants, and the duration of any display must not exceed five minutes from the time of the first blast,” ACP Kituuma Rusoke said.
He said the guidelines are intended to protect the public as crowds gather to usher in New Year 2026, noting that while the Christmas festive period remained largely peaceful, Police are taking no chances with public safety.
Rusoke added that all fireworks displays must be publicly advertised in advance, especially through local FM radio stations and newspapers, to alert the public and relevant authorities.
According to Police, Counter Terrorism officers will escort fireworks materials and supervise all displays in coordination with District Police Commanders, who will first inspect venues to confirm their suitability.
He warned that Area DPCs have the authority to halt any fireworks display that does not comply with the set guidelines, adding that any unused fireworks materials must only be handled by individuals holding valid explosives blaster licences.
Police also cautioned the public against burning tyres or firing shots into the air as part of New Year celebrations, saying such acts pose serious risks to life and property.
As the country prepares to cross into the New Year, Rusoke urged organisers of events and the general public to celebrate responsibly and work closely with Police to ensure a safe and peaceful transition into 2026.
“The Uganda Police Force remains committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens. We call upon everyone to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies,” he said.
Police encouraged the public to report emergencies using the designated hotlines as they wished Ugandans a peaceful and safe New Year.
