Police in Gulu say they have dismantled organized criminal networks linked to violence that erupted in Gulu City Centre during a campaign visit by National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu earlier this month.

In a statement, Aswa Region Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong said investigations into the December 6, 2025 incidents revealed coordinated acts of assault and looting targeting members of the public.

“Following the acts of criminality involving assaults and the looting of people’s property that occurred in Gulu City Centre on 6th December 2025, during a campaign visit by the NUP Presidential candidate, Mr. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, we wish to inform the public of the following developments,” Ongom said.

He explained that police reviewed CCTV footage and relied on intelligence networks to conduct a targeted night operation on December 18, 2025, across Gulu City and surrounding suburbs.

“Through the analysis of CCTV footage and other intelligence networks, the Police conducted a well-coordinated, intelligence-led operation,” Ongom said, adding that the operation led to the arrest of 41 suspects now being held at Gulu Central Police Station.

Police further revealed that one of the suspects in custody, Aleng Fatuma, is believed to have played a key role in mobilizing suspected criminal gangs through digital platforms, including TikTok.

“Among those arrested is Aleng Fatuma, who is alleged to have led the mobilization of the suspected criminal gangs using various media platforms, including TikTok, among others,” Ongom noted, adding that investigations are continuing to trace and arrest all accomplices.

Ongom reassured the public that police would take firm action against anyone found responsible for the violence.

“As earlier promised, all individuals found culpable will either be summoned or arrested in accordance with the law,” he said.

He also appealed for calm among residents of the Acholi Sub-region, emphasizing that police are committed to restoring order and ensuring justice for victims.

“We urge the general public, especially the people of Acholi Sub-region, to remain calm as we remain committed to ensuring that all those responsible are brought to book so that justice prevails,” Ongom said.
