Lwengo District witnessed a tragic start to the day on Saturday morning as a head-on collision along the Masaka–Mbarara highway claimed seven lives, including two juveniles.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. in Njagalakasayi, involving a silver Toyota Fielder (UBH 476W) and a silver Fuso truck (UBP 510V).

Preliminary police reports suggest that the Toyota Fielder, traveling from Masaka towards Mbarara, veered into the opposite lane and collided with the oncoming Fuso truck.

All four occupants of the Toyota Fielder died instantly at the scene, including the male driver, an adult female passenger, and two children.

Rescue teams later recovered three more bodies from the vicinity, bringing the total death toll to seven.

Traffic Police quickly responded, securing the area while the vehicles were towed for inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

The victims’ bodies were taken to Masaka City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.

SP Twaha Kasirye, Public Relations Officer for the Greater Masaka Region, said reckless driving appears to have caused the tragedy but emphasized that investigations are ongoing.

He urged drivers to exercise caution, particularly during early morning hours when visibility is low and fatigue can compromise alertness.
