Police in Nateete have arrested seven suspected motorcycle thieves following a targeted security operation mounted after residents raised alarm over a spike in robberies.
The operation, conducted on December 11, 2025, focused on crime-prone areas of Lungujja, Kosovo, Mutundwe, and along Nakawuka Road, which had recently recorded increased cases of motorcycle attacks.
Confirming the arrests, Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala said the suspects allegedly posed as passengers before attacking and robbing unsuspecting boda boda riders.
“Following public outcry over the surge in motorcycle robberies in Lungujja, Kosovo, Mutundwe and Nakawuka Road, police carried out a disruptive operation targeting motorcycle thieves, which led to the arrest of seven suspects,” Kawala said.
Police identified the suspects as Mwesigwa Denis, Washington Erias, Niwugu Samuel, Nasasira Derick, Medy, Mbabali and Nsereko Sam.
During the operation, officers recovered two motorcycles — UEW 612H and UMA 471AG — along with other exhibits believed to have been used in the robberies.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the suspects would disguise themselves as customers with the intention of robbing riders of their motorcycles,” Kawala added.
The suspects are currently detained at Lungujja and Wakaliga Police Stations, as police investigate a case of aggravated robbery.
In a related development, police at Central Police Station (CPS) are holding Mugabi Hakim, alias “Younger,” a suspected habitual pickpocket who operates along Luwum Street.
He was arrested during another disruptive operation around Mutasa Kafeero on December 12, 2025, at about midday.
SP Kawala said police operations will be intensified as the festive season approaches.
“Our operations will continue, especially during the festive period, to ensure the safety of the public and curb criminal activity,” she said.
