The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have confirmed the arrest of Rev. Fr. Deusdedit Ssekabira of Masaka Diocese over alleged involvement in violent subversive activities against the state.
UPDF said the Catholic priest was recently arrested by security forces and is currently being held in lawful custody to facilitate ongoing criminal investigations.
“This is to confirm that Rev. Fr. Deusdedit Ssekabira of Masaka Diocese was recently arrested by the security forces for involvement in violent subversive activities against the state,” said Col. Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information at UPDF.
Col. Magezi added that Fr. Ssekabira will be arraigned before court once investigations are completed.
“He is currently in lawful custody to assist with further investigations into the matter. He will be produced in the courts of law and charged accordingly,” Col. Magezi stated.
The UPDF confirmation follows reports that Fr. Ssekabira was abducted on Wednesday the 3rd from his office in Katwe, Masaka, by unidentified security operatives, an incident that sparked concern among members of the clergy and the public.
Security authorities have not yet disclosed details regarding the alleged subversive activities, saying investigations are still ongoing.
