Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has emerged victorious in the Kampala mayoral race after securing 141,220 votes, defeating incumbent mayor Elias Lukwago and several other contenders.
The results saw Balimwezo overcome Lukwago of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), Democratic Party (DP) candidate Beatrice Mao, and six others in a highly competitive contest.
Balimwezo’s win marks a turning point in Kampala’s political leadership, ending Lukwago’s long tenure at City Hall.
Throughout his campaign, Balimwezo positioned himself as a technocrat, pushing the message that the city needs professional leadership, under the slogan “Kampala needs an Engineer.” His message gained strong support, especially among voters frustrated by poor infrastructure and service delivery.
The new Lord Mayor previously served as Nakawa Division Mayor and later as Nakawa East Member of Parliament, where he completed a single term as promised.
His election now raises expectations for practical reforms and a new approach to managing Uganda’s capital city.
