Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki has inspected ongoing road works across the city, warning contractors that poor workmanship and dirty sites will not be tolerated.
Accompanied by her deputy, Benon Kigenyi, Buzeki walked through several active construction zones on Wednesday under the 14.65-kilometre city road upgrade project being implemented by Dott Services Limited.
“We want to see progress with our own eyes,” Buzeki said. “These roads affect people’s daily lives, so quality, safety and timelines must move together.”
The team started from Lower Kololo Terrace, where asphalt works are ongoing, before heading to Kisenyi, where drainage and manhole construction is underway on Erisa Nkonyonyo Road, Church Road and Naava Road.
At Erisa Nkonyonyo Road, Buzeki stopped the inspection after noticing leaking sewer lines and an untidy worksite. She ordered the contractor to clean up before work continues.
“Road construction cannot come at the cost of public health,” she said. “Clean, orderly worksites are not optional — they are part of delivering a complete road.”
In Lubaga Division, the team inspected Kabaka’s Lake Road, where asphalt works are progressing. The road is expected to be completed within four months.
However, work had stalled on Nachwa Road due to delays in relocating water, power and telecom lines. Engineers told the KCCA team that extra time was needed to install larger ducts to prevent future road damage.
“These coordination challenges are real, but they must be resolved quickly,” Buzeki said. “We are pushing for better planning with utility agencies so that once work starts, it moves without unnecessary stops.”
Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi said the inspections are meant to ensure all contractors meet the same standards across the city.
“Our role is to make sure contractors meet the required standards across every road, not just a few,” Kigenyi said. “We are tracking progress closely so that delays are addressed early and quality is maintained.”
The UGX 550 billion government-funded project covers 24 roads across Kampala, including Kabaka’s Lake Road, Lower Kololo Terrace, Bukoto Street, Wilson Road, Market Street, Kalinabiri Road and the Mengo–Kisenyi link road.
The project includes paving roads with bitumen, installing covered drainage, solar street lights and pedestrian walkways.
“These roads are about more than asphalt,” Kigenyi said. “They are about safer movement, better drainage and a city that works better for everyone.”
For Kampala residents, the inspections signal closer supervision as the city’s road network is rebuilt, one road at a time.
