The government has postponed the reopening of all schools and education institutions by one week, shifting the date from February 2 to February 10, 2026, to allow for a safer transition after the General Elections.
In a statement issued on January 16, the Ministry of Education and Sports said the adjustment was necessary to safeguard learners and education staff during the post-election period.
The directive affects all institutions, including nursery, primary and secondary schools, international schools, tertiary institutions and universities.
According to the ministry, the decision follows consultations within government on the security and logistical implications of reopening schools immediately after the elections.
“Due to the General Elections and in order to ensure the safety of all learners, all schools and education institutions across the country are directed to reopen on Tuesday, 10th February 2026,” said Kedrace R. Turyagyenda, the Permanent Secretary.
The ministry confirmed that Term One of the 2026 academic year will run from February 10 to May 1, 2026, and urged all education institutions to strictly follow the revised calendar.
Turyagyenda emphasized that adherence to the approved school calendar is mandatory for all administrators.
“All school administrators must adhere firmly to these dates and the approved school calendar published on the Ministry website,” she said.
The ministry called on parents, guardians and school managers to adjust their plans in line with the new reopening dates, noting that no institution is exempt from the directive.
The earlier reopening date of February 2 had been announced on January 6 but was revised to accommodate the national electoral process.
