Police in Isingiro District have arrested a man in connection with the murder of Karuhanga Gordon, a 48-year-old resident of Rugaara Cell, Kagarama Parish, Kagarama Sub-county.

According to police, the arrest followed a major breakthrough after officers swiftly responded to a report of the incident.

“Following a report of the incident, Police promptly responded with a team comprising homicide detectives, Scenes of Crime Officers, and a K-9 unit,” police said.

At the scene, officers carried out a detailed assessment before deploying a sniffer dog.

“At the scene, a thorough examination was conducted by the dog handler, after which a sniffer dog was introduced,” police said.

The dog reportedly tracked the strongest scent believed to belong to the suspect.

“The dog picked up the strongest scent believed to belong to the suspect and tracked it for a distance of about 100 meters from the scene, eventually leading to and positively identifying a suspect known as Gerald,” police said.

Police noted that the suspect was among community members who were present at the scene.

Investigators further established that the suspect was a co-worker of the deceased.

“The suspect was identified by the complainant as a co-worker of the deceased. It was established that both men were employed by the same person to work on a plantation and were residing together in the same house,” police said.

Upon arrest, officers observed physical evidence linking the suspect to the crime.

“Upon arrest, the suspect was found with bloodstains on his hands, suspected to be of human origin,” police said.

During interrogation, police said the suspect admitted to fighting with the deceased.

“During interrogation, he confessed to having fought with the deceased during the night, together with four other individuals who were in the house, after returning from a drinking joint,” police said.

Police also recovered items believed to have been used in the killing.

“The suspected murder weapons, a pit axe and a stick, both bearing bloodstains, were recovered at the scene,” police added.

Investigations into the murder are ongoing as police continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and the possible involvement of other individuals mentioned by the suspect.
