Police in Sironko District have dismissed claims that a man was shot during the campaign trail of the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate, describing the allegations as false and unsupported by medical evidence.
According to police, the incident occurred on the afternoon of January 4, 2026, in Buchibindi village, Budadiri Town Council, involving a Toyota Wish, registration number UBM 430K, driven by Lubulwa Hamza.
Police say the driver dangerously overtook the candidate’s convoy at high speed and ignored repeated orders to stop issued by the security detail.
In the process, the vehicle nearly collided with one of the escort security cars, prompting officers to pursue and intercept it.
“While driving recklessly, he overtook the candidate’s convoy, refused to stop when flagged down by the security detail, and nearly knocked the security vehicle. This prompted a pursuit and interception. On being stopped, he resisted lawful arrest and, in the ensuing scuffle, sustained a wound to the head” said SP Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Public Relations Officer.
He added that the injured man was immediately taken to hospital for medical attention.
SP Taitika emphasized that no firearm was discharged during the incident, contrary to reports circulating on social media.
“Allegations that he was shot are false and not supported by clinical evidence.,” he said.
Police have warned the public against spreading unverified information, especially during the election period, noting that such claims can cause unnecessary panic and tension.
