Police Put Candidates on Spot, Urge Clean Campaigns as Election Tension Rises

The Uganda Police Force has cautioned political candidates and their supporters against acts of violence and lawlessness as the country counts down to polling day, warning that criminal behaviour could undermine hard-won electoral gains.

Speaking to the media during a press briefing at the Police Headquarters in Naguru, the Police Chief Political Commissar, AIGP Ubaldo Bamunoba, said the final days of campaigning are often the most volatile, as political competition intensifies across the country.

“With only four days remaining to polling day, the electoral process has entered a critical phase. While campaigns are peaking, there is no excuse whatsoever for criminal acts being committed in the name of politics,” AIGP Bamunoba said.

He noted that security agencies are particularly concerned about attempts by some actors to provoke violence, calling on citizens to show restraint and reject confrontations, even when provoked.

According to Bamunoba, peaceful conduct by voters and candidates alike is a key test of political maturity and respect for democratic values. He urged the public to promptly report any incidents of violence or disorder to police for swift intervention.

“The Uganda Police Force, in coordination with other security agencies, is fully committed to securing the electoral process at every level,” he said, adding that law enforcement remains on high alert nationwide.

The police political commissar also directed his message to those seeking political office, reminding them that leadership is judged not only by promises made, but by conduct displayed during campaigns.

“Clean leadership can only come from clean conduct. Those who desire to lead must uphold discipline, responsibility and respect for the rule of law,” Bamunoba emphasized.

Bamunoba reiterated that peace before, during and after the elections is non-negotiable, warning that instability threatens both democracy and the country’s long-term progress.
