The Government of Uganda has announced that Wednesday, 15th January, and Thursday, 16th January 2026 will be public holidays nationwide.
The move aims to give citizens enough time to participate in the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
Under the Public Holidays Act (Cap. 174), President Yoweri Museveni exercised his authority to declare the two-day break.
“I declare 15th and 16th January, 2026 to be observed as public holidays throughout Uganda for the purpose of enabling citizens to participate in the Presidential and Parliamentary elections,”
The declaration, signed on 8th January 2026, comes as the country prepares for a highly anticipated election period, ensuring voters can fully engage in the democratic process.
