The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the resumption of periodic maintenance works along the Kampala Northern Bypass, with motorists warned to expect temporary traffic diversions for the next two months.

The works, which start on February 13, 2026, will affect Phase One of the Northern Bypass, particularly the stretch between Bwaise Interchange and Namungoona Interchange.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Works and Transport, Bageya Waiswa, said the repairs are aimed at improving safety and driving comfort along one of Kampala’s busiest roads.

“The Ministry wishes to inform all road users on the planned resumption of periodic maintenance works along the Kampala Northern Bypass, Phase One, commencing on 13th February 2026 for a period of at least two months,” Waiswa said.

He explained that the works, which will be carried out by M/S Stirling Civil Engineering Ltd, will involve removing the old asphalt, preparing the base, applying a primer, and laying a new asphalt overlay.

“The affected section of the carriageway will be fully closed, with traffic temporarily diverted to the opposite side to allow for safe and efficient execution of the works,” Waiswa said.

During the maintenance period, motorists travelling between Bwaise and Namungoona will be required to use the diverted lanes within the work zones. The ministry has urged drivers to be cautious and follow all traffic signs and instructions from personnel on the ground.

“Motorists are advised to exercise patience, observe all traffic signage, and comply with instructions issued by traffic personnel on site,” Waiswa added.

He also encouraged road users to plan ahead and, where possible, use alternative routes to reduce congestion along the Northern Bypass.

The ministry apologised for the inconvenience but said the temporary disruptions are necessary to ensure the long-term safety and durability of the road.

“We regret any disruption caused and appreciate the cooperation of the public as we undertake works to improve the road infrastructure and enhance the overall driving experience,” Waiswa said.

The Kampala Northern Bypass is a critical transport corridor linking the eastern and western parts of the city, and officials say the ongoing maintenance will help ease future travel and reduce vehicle damage caused by worn-out road surfaces.
