48 Arrested in Pre-Dawn Police Operation Targeting Crime Hotspots in Kajjansi

At least 48 suspected criminals were arrested in the early hours of Monday morning following a coordinated intelligence-led operation by the territorial police at Kajjansi Police Division under the Kampala Metropolitan Police South.

According to police, the suspects were rounded up during routine patrols that began around 3:30 a.m. in known criminal black spots within the Lweza area, including Muchanga, Kajjansi town, and the notorious Sanyu Brothel.

Of the arrested, 18 were picked up in Muchanga, 20 in Kajjansi, and 10 at Sanyu Brothel all areas previously flagged for high levels of street crime and gang activity.

Police said the operation was based on actionable intelligence that pointed to organized criminal activity involving loitering, gambling, and disguised robbery operations by local youth.

“In areas such as Muchanga, a number of youths disguise themselves as bottle and dustbin collectors but, during odd hours, attack homes and rob residents of their valuables,” said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police.

Preliminary investigations revealed that some of the suspects were found in possession of tools commonly used for housebreaking, including two pairs of pliers, three testas, and three knives. These items have been secured as evidence.

All 48 suspects, most of whom are between 17 and 23 years of age, are currently detained at Bwebajja and Lubowa Police Stations.

Police say they are recording statements from both complainants and arresting officers as investigations continue ahead of the suspects’ arraignment.

“The Police remain committed to protecting communities by disrupting criminal networks and ensuring those involved are brought to justice,” said ASP Owoyesigyire. “We encourage members of the public to continue sharing timely information to support our efforts.”

The Monday morning raid is part of a broader crackdown aimed at restoring safety in urban residential areas around Kampala where criminal elements have taken advantage of informal settlements and unlit areas to stage petty and violent crimes.
