Police in Kampala Metropolitan Area have arrested 10 suspects during a late-night operation in Buwate–Najjera, Kira Municipality, as part of ongoing efforts to curb crime linked to drug abuse.
The operation, carried out by Kira Division police with support from sister security agencies, targeted a wooden structure where the suspects were found allegedly consuming illegal drugs.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SP Rachael Kawala, said the suspects were caught in the act.
“Our officers arrested ten suspects red-handed while smoking substances suspected to be narcotics. We also recovered rolled sticks and powdered leaves believed to be drugs from the scene,” Kawala said.
Police say early investigations suggest the suspects were using drugs to fuel criminal activities in the area.
“Preliminary findings show that these individuals take narcotics before engaging in crimes such as waylaying pedestrians and stoning moving vehicles,” Kawala added.
All the suspects are currently being held at police as investigations continue, and a case of possession of narcotic substances, namely opium, has been opened against them.
SP Kawala assured the public that security operations will not stop.
“Operations will continue during and after the election period to ensure the safety and security of the public,” she said.
