Six Injured in Gas Explosion at Sports Pro Hostel in Nakawa

A powerful gas explosion at Sports Pro Hostel in Banda Zone Nine, Nakawa Division, on Monday night left six people critically injured, including five students from Kyambogo University.

Eyewitnesses report that the blast likely occurred when a student was cooking in her room, triggering a violent explosion that tore through the ground floor of the three-storey building. Doors were blown off their hinges, windows shattered, and several residents and bystanders sustained injuries.

Among the most seriously affected is Frank, the hostel’s security guard, who was initially taken to a nearby clinic before being transferred to Naguru Hospital for further treatment. The student victims include Flavia Chelangat and Florence Akello, while three others had not yet been identified by press time.

Police responded swiftly, cordoning off the area and deploying fire and rescue personnel to control the situation.

“Our officers responded promptly, secured the area, and evacuated the victims for treatment,” said Patrick Onyango, spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police.

The injured were admitted to Naguru Hospital and Mulago National Referral Hospital, where they remain under close medical supervision.

Onyango noted that although the explosion caused significant damage to the property, quick intervention prevented additional casualties.

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the explosion as police continue to examine the scene and gather evidence.
