Burial Journey Turns Tragic as Four Mourners Die, 20 Injured in Mubende Road Crash

MUBENDE – A burial journey ended in tragedy on Friday, September 5, 2025, when four mourners were killed and at least 20 others injured in a road accident along the Kyegegwa–Mubende highway.

The 4:30 a.m. accident occurred at Nabutiti–Kisujja, Mubende District, involving a motor vehicle registration number UBF 636F, an Isuzu Elf, which was carrying about 35 passengers heading to a burial in Kassanda.

According to the Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, SP Racheal Kawala, preliminary findings suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and overturn.

“The accident claimed four lives on the spot and left twenty others nursing serious injuries. The deceased have been identified as Anold Maniriho, 43; Sekubulye Richard, 36; Tumuranze Enid, 40; and Kobusingye Edvina, 23, all residents of Kangoma ‘A’, Rushango Town Council, Ibanda District,” said SP Kawala.

The injured victims, many of whom are from Ibanda and Kamwenge districts, include Karuhanga James (34), Mukamohere Kellen (45), Karire Jackline (34), Mufuruko Edison, Twiine Innocent (21), Kwendera John (58), Tumwikirize Scovia (56), Tugume Medard, and Busingye Medius (53). Several others are yet to be identified.

Police officers visited and documented the scene before rushing the victims to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the same hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

The wreckage has been towed for inspection, and police suspect careless driving as the cause of the crash.

“We are making every effort to trace and arrest the driver, who is currently on the run, so that he is held accountable,” SP Kawala added.

Police have since appealed to road users to exercise caution and strictly observe traffic regulations to avoid similar tragedies.
