Fort Portal is preparing for a vibrant celebration of culture, fashion, and music with the Hats and Shorts: Empaako Jam 2025, scheduled from Friday, September 12 to Sunday, September 14 at the historic Empaako Village.

The festival coincides with the 30th Coronation Anniversary of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the youthful king of the Tooro Kingdom.

Organized by Akili Ya Afrika, this three-day festival promises an exciting mix of live music, traditional performances, fashion showcases, and creative exhibitions, giving both Ugandans and international visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the rich heritage of the region.

At the heart of the festival is the Empaako naming tradition, recognized by UNESCO for promoting unity and social cohesion. Attendees will have the rare opportunity to receive an Empaako name and experience firsthand the Kingdom’s unique customs.

“The Empaako Jam is more than just entertainment. It’s a celebration of culture, creativity, and community,” said Ngonzi Wataba, Principal of Akili Ya Afrika.

Festival Highlights Include:

  • Live Performances: Featuring top Ugandan artists such as Mark D Urban, Coco Finger, Karol Kasiita, and Iryn Hindah.
  • Cultural Experiences: Traditional dances, storytelling, and rituals.
  • Fashion Showcases: African Klass-Kulture attire focused on hats and shorts, with prizes for the best-dressed couple.
  • Artisan Exhibitions: Promoting local and sustainable products.

Daily Themes:

  • Friday, September 12 – Roots, Culture, and Dancehall: Mark D Urban, WestSyd, The Home of Talent
  • Saturday, September 13 – Empaako Party Culture: Coco Finger, Fefe Bussi
  • Sunday, September 14 – The Royal Brunch: Karol Kasiita, Iryn Hindah, Kahiri, John Kaahwa

Proceeds from the event will support educational projects such as stocking libraries in underserved schools, as well as environmental initiatives like tree-planting to restore local forests.

With its mix of tradition, entertainment, and social impact, the Hats and Shorts: Empaako Jam 2025 positions Fort Portal as a leading destination for cultural tourism, inviting visitors to celebrate Uganda’s heritage while making a positive impact on the community.
