Police Arrest 79 During Presidential Nominations

The just-concluded presidential nominations in Lubowa, Kajjansi Town Council, ended with 79 arrests linked to petty crime and breaches of security guidelines, Uganda Police have confirmed.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, the two-day exercise held on September 23–24, 2025, went on smoothly overall. “Despite these incidents, the nomination exercise concluded without any serious incidents reported,” he said.

The bulk of the arrests occurred on the first day when 44 suspects were netted at President Yoweri Museveni’s rally in Kololo over allegations of phone snatching and pickpocketing. Police said the group is currently being held at Jinja Road Police Station, pending prosecution.

The second day in Kajjansi saw 35 more suspects apprehended for disobeying security directives. Among those taken in was Makindye West MP, Hon. Allan Ssewanyana, who Onyango later confirmed had been released on Police bond together with his group.

In addition, Police operations targeted unruly supporters of NUP presidential aspirant Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, some of whom were arrested for reckless riding and assaulting innocent people.

Authorities also impounded two vehicles and 40 motorcycles connected to the disruptions.

With the security operations concluded, the nomination exercise cleared the way for eight candidates to be confirmed for the 2026 general elections.
