Uganda Police has issued a stern warning to all political actors following a serious road accident involving the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential aspirant, Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, and his convoy along the Kalagi–Kayunga Road near Namyoya Village.
The accident, which occurred around 11:30 AM, involved multiple motorcycles and a white Mitsubishi vehicle (registration number UAZ 064H) carrying images of Kyagulanyi.
Police said a motorcycle traveling at high speed collided with a vehicle from behind, causing a chain reaction in which several motorcycles crashed into one another, before the Mitsubishi vehicle also collided with some of the motorcycles.
Several people sustained injuries and were rushed to St. Francis Naggalama Hospital.
The injured, mostly motorcycle riders and passengers, include Kewanza Bashir (27), Kakaire Bashir (35), Ssepereza Musa (40), Kisomba Michael (28), Ssewaya Eric (23), and Mutagubya Robert (24). Some with minor injuries left the scene on their motorcycles.
Police investigations indicate that reckless riding and driving were the main causes of the accident.
Additionally, officers noted that earlier in the day, campaign boards featuring Kyagulanyi’s images had been placed in the middle of the road, obstructing traffic and endangering road users.
A police spokesperson emphasized the need for political actors to prioritize safety on the roads.
“We reiterate a strong warning to all political actors and their entourages to comply fully with traffic laws. Irresponsible road use, as demonstrated in this unfortunate incident that caused multiple injuries, will not be tolerated. The Police will enforce strict measures to prevent such conduct and ensure adherence to the law.”
Authorities urged all politicians to exercise caution and ensure their campaign activities do not put the public at risk, warning that similar incidents will attract strict enforcement measures.
