Police Refute Claims of Security Involvement in Gulu Teen’s Death

Police have clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of 16-year-old Otim Leon Joshua, a student and resident of Customs Corner Cell, Bardeg Layibi Division, following circulating social media claims.

According to the police, Otim left home on 6th December around 5 p.m., telling his mother he was going to town, but he did not return by 11 p.m.

“At around 5 a.m., the mother was approached by two boda boda riders who had brought her son, Otim Leon Joshua, badly beaten and unconscious,” police said. They added that the riders informed the mother of the individuals who allegedly assaulted Otim at Lailong.

Police confirmed that the teen was accused of stealing a mobile phone at around 4 a.m., and the mother immediately rushed him to Lacor Hospital for medical attention. Sadly, despite treatment, Otim passed away on 9th December around midday.

Investigations further revealed that Otim, a student at Exel High School in Mukono, had returned home for the holidays.

“Further investigation has confirmed that the deceased was assaulted by four boys who are currently at large. Efforts are underway to apprehend them,” the police statement said.

The authorities also addressed claims circulating online that linked Otim’s death to security personnel or political figures.

“It is important to note that claims suggesting that the deceased died due to a scuffle involving security agencies and Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi are false and baseless. The truth is that Otim Leon Joshua succumbed to injuries inflicted by those who suspected him of theft,” police emphasized.

Police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and promised to do everything possible to bring the perpetrators to justice.
